Homemade peanut butter treats are easy to make. You can even make your own peanut butter at home, which is cost effective.  Whether you prefer hard treats, soft treats or grain free treats you’ll always be able to find a peanut butter recipe. The best thing about making a homemade dog treats, is that you can control the ingredients and the calories that go into them, ensuring that your dog is getting healthy treats and keeping away from any dangerous dog treats. You might be looking for a new interesting treat, here are a few homemade dog treats to try:

Homemade Smooth Peanut Butter

There are so many varieties of peanuts in store brought peanut butter, not to mention the amount of sugar, weird preservatives or “natural” favours that are included. How about making your own fresh, healthy peanut butter? You could use it in your next peanut butter dog treat recipe or even on your morning toast.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Unsalted Organic Shelled Peanuts
  • 1 Teaspoon Organic 100% Pure Honey
  • Peanut Oil (optional) – Helps keeps your dog’s coat shiny and promotes skin and joint health.

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F.
  2. Place the peanuts into a cake pan or a rimmed baking sheet, and roast the peanuts for 4 minutes. Shake the pan and roast for an extra 3 – 5 minutes, or until the peanuts are golden brown and smelly nutty.
  3. Add the roasted peanuts into a food processor – Process for 1 minute, use a spoon to push down the peanuts which have stuck to the side. Then process for another 3 minutes, or until the peanut butter is shiny and smooth.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of honey into the food processor, then process until combined.
  5. If the peanut butter seems too thick, you can add peanut oil (a teaspoon at a time) until you are happy with the texture.
  6. Place the peanut butter into an airtight container and store in the fridge. It can be stored in the fridge for up to one month.

Homemade Smooth Almond Peanut Butter

Ingredients:

PB, Honey and Yogurt Pup-Sicles

This is a quick and easy doggie dessert. It’s also a great dog treat for the summertime. I have added my favorite recipe below, but you can mix the ingredients up to whatever your dog likes – All you need is to make sure that the food you choose is safe for your dog to eat. These are one of my dogs favorite treats! She LOVES them.

Ingredients:
  • 1 Cup Smooth Organic or Homemade Peanut Butter
  • 1 Teaspoon Fresh Parsley
  • 1 Teaspoon Organic 100% Pure Honey
  • 1 Cup Low-Fat Plain Yogurt
  • Bone shaped molds (optional)

Directions:

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Scoop the mixture into molds and freeze for two hours.

Grain Free Peanut Butter Cookies

Many dogs, mine included, absolutely love peanut putter and there is always a jar in the house. If your dog has no issues with wheat, you can substitute whole-wheat flour or all-purpose flour for chickpea flour.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Ripe Banana (Mashed)
  • 3 Tablespoons Organic or Homemade Peanut Butter
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 3/4 Cups Chickpea Flour

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, mix together the banana, peanut butter, egg and chickpea flour, until it forms a dough.
  4. Place the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 3 minutes, then roll the dough out to 1/4″ thickness.
  5. Using cookie cutters or a pizza cutter, cut the cookies and place on the baking tray.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Once done, allow the cookies to cool down before serving them to your dog. These cookies can be refrigerated for up to 5 days or frozen in an airtight contain for up to 6 months.

Vegan PB and Apple Sauce Clusters

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Organic Apple Sauce, Unsweetened
  • 1 Cup Organic or Homemade Peanut Butter
  • 2 Cup Quick-Cook Oats
  • 1/4-Cup Organic Coconut Oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 3 Cups Whole Wheat Flour

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Place parchment paper onto two baking trays.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface. If you find that the dough is too loose and crumbly, you can add a 1/4-cup of coconut oil at this point.
  5. Ripe pieces from the dough and form into small-sized balls and place them on the baking sheet.
  6. Place the ball clusters into the oven, for approx. 25 minutes or until golden brown. These can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

Peanut butter is one of the most popular dogs treats that are sold in stores – But there is one very important ingredient that you need to ensure your next store brought peanut butter treats doesn’t contain, and that is ‘xylitol’. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener which is extremely dangerous to dogs. It can only take your dog to eat a small amount of this before is can cause a sever drop in your dogs blood level, liver failure and death.
